Xinan Ran’s “Tree Chuang” Merges Art and Community

From October 1-15, installed behind the Sunset Park Recreation Center, is a striking 15-foot soft sculpture “Tree Chuang”, created by artist Xinan Ran. The project blossomed with a supportive grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council in 2023.

Rooted deeply in Brooklyn’s diverse culture, “Tree Chuang” is a collective endeavor of local Chinese and Latino participants, enriched by partnerships with neighborhood organizations like Apex For Youth, Mixteca, Voces Ciudadanas, and Artyard Brooklyn. Through community-driven workshops, participants weaved their narratives into individual fabric pieces which now form the quilted tapestry of the sculpture.

Themed “Pass-downs,” each textile patch in the sculpture brims with vivid artistry and poignant tales, capturing the essence of its creator’s life experiences. Delving deeper into tradition, Xinan Ran’s design pays homage to Chinese chuangs – cylindrical textiles inscribed with prayers. It isn’t just a piece to behold from afar. Stepping into each chuang, you’re offered a tranquil oasis for introspection amidst the bustling public space.

The sculpture will be installed for public viewing between Oct 1-15, with a special free outdoor event on Oct 7, 2-5pm (raincheck Oct 14) near the handball court behind the Sunset Park Recreation Center.
