Staten Island Bioblitz 2024

What is a Bioblitz you may wonder? A Bioblitz event is when researchers and naturalists from all around come together to collect scientific data on the biodiversity of a particular area. Families, students, teachers, and scientists work hand-in-hand to identify as many animal and fauna species as possible. The schedule of events is below. Pick your favorite program or spend the entire day in the park.  Use iNaturalist to collect some data. Download this free app onto your personal device before you arrive to add your data.

9:00 a.m. – Bird Walk-This guided walk is for all skill levels. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair (limited) (led by NYC Parks Wildlife Unit)

10:30 a.m. – Tick Talk-Be smart about ticks! This will include a presentation and overview of the different tick species found in NYC (led by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene)

11:00 a.m. – Seining- Identify the marine wildlife living around this park. Pre-register online (led by NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers)

1:30 p.m. – Fungi-These organisms are the cornerstone of healthy ecosystems. Assist in surveying the fungi found in this park (led by the New York Mycological Society).

3:00 p.m. – Tree Walk-learn about the abundance of tree species native to the southern tip of New York. (led by NYC Parks)

4:00 p.m. – Wildlife Camera Data Review-Drop in and assist in identifying species the game camera captured during the bioblitz and have your wildlife questions answered. (led by NYC Parks Wildlife Unit)
