Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses (ZOOM)

With unspoiled and tranquil shorelines, Fire Island has been an oasis for vacationers for over 150 years. However, “master builder” Robert Moses had other plans: construction and an Ocean Parkway extension. Unified in mutual love of their sun-washed sandy beaches and hoping to maintain a traditional way of life – with limited access to motor vehicles – the communities began the fight for federal protection through the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore.
