Manhattan PRIDE at CMOM

Children can learn about the heritage of Pride, historic LGBTQ+ New York City leaders, and how to become active members in their communities through a variety of artmaking and STEM projects, story times, music and dance activities, and special performances.

PROUD TO STAND UP
The Stonewall Uprising was a series of protests in New York City where members of the LGBTQ+ community stood up for their basic rights and rights to self-expression. CMOM will honor this important moment in the City’s history through activities that help build tools to stand up for fundamental rights.

Artful Activism
Children will create a sign in support of the LGBTQ+ community and learn about LGBTQ+ civil rights and pioneering figures like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.

Mighty Megaphones
Kids can design their own megaphones to amplify their voices and raise awareness about community issues that are important to them.

Storytime with Poppy Harlow and Laura Jarrett: THE COLOR OF LOVE
If love were a color, what color would it be? CNN news anchor Poppy Harlow and Saturday TODAY‘s Laura Jarrett will read a warmhearted tale that encourages young readers to celebrate the many meanings of love, followed by a fun artmaking activity.

Three-Dimensional Pride Flag
Children will create a giant 3-dimensional Pride banner to honor the Christopher Street Day Liberation March.

Explore Screen-printing techniques and play with color mixing with this fun, rainbow-themed project.

Science Experiment: Supernova Rainbow
Using liquids of differing densities as well as gravity, kids will explore the cosmos by creating their own rainbow supernovas.

Strike A Pose!: Photo Booth Mural
All visitors are invited to strike a pose in front of a fierce backdrop in an interactive, fabulous installation. Photos can be added to The Friendship Tree installation or brought home as a keepsake!

Pride Parade Floats
Pride is a mix of strength and joy, starting with the community and its continued efforts to reach equality. Children will create a mini-Pride parade float that expresses something in their community that is important to them.

Community Bracelets
A community is a large family that uplifts all its members. Participants will create a unique bracelet and trade it with a new friend at the Museum.

Julián Is a Mermaid Head Crowns
Children will create a botanical mermaid crown inspired by the book Julián Is a Mermaid—author Jessica Love’s spirited picture book about a boy who dreams of being a pretty mermaid and his grandmother who supports his dream.

Inspired by the book A Boy and His Mirror by Marchánt Davis, kids will make a self-affirming mirror designed to strengthen self-esteem.

Rainbow Seekers Performance: A Pride Show for Everyone
Rainbow Seekers is the new queer family musical from nationally acclaimed children’s band Ants on a Log. This interactive show encourages children to explore authentic self-expression and practice social-emotional skills through singing, dancing, and hands-on superpower-themed activities.

CMOM’s Kiki Dance Party
The word “Kiki” grew out of Black LGBTQ+ American social culture, and it means to gather and share space with friends. Kids will shake their sillies out and kiki to the sounds of house beats.

I Love My Hair!
Hair tells vibrant stories about style and cultures. Inspired by The Hair Book by LaTonya Yvette, kids will celebrate the beauty and diversity of hair as they twist, curl, and accessorize a mixed-media hair portrait with yarn, wax sticks and ribbons.

Interactive Storytime: Bodies Are Cool by Tyler Feler
