Math Encounters: “Realizing Abstractions: what can mathematics do for art?”

November 1, 2023, 4 pm7 pm.
Free

Does counting sheep help you understand counting?  Can drawing a picture help you capture geometry?  With that understanding, can we make new tools to create art?  Can tools such as 3D printers, alongside mathematics, reconnect art to its ancient tradition of technology?  Join Edmund Harriss, the first-ever joint professor of mathematics and art, to discover how mathematical thinking can push the possibilities of art and how artistic sensibilities and illustration can challenge the boundaries of mathematics research.

Special introduction by Chaim Goodman-Strauss, MoMath’s Outreach Mathematician and co-author of the recent groundbreaking paper on the “the Hat.”

Math Encounters is MoMath’s popular free public presentation series celebrating the spectacular world of mathematics, produced with support from Simons Foundation International.  Light refreshments will be served.
