Farmhouse Family Day: Pinkster Celebration

The Pinkster Festival is a very important 350-year-old, but little known, Africanized celebration which took place annually in the Hudson River Valley region, including the N.Y.C. area, for almost 200 years. The Africans enslaved by Dutch colonists took this opportunity to celebrate with their own music, dance and other cultural expressions of their African heritage. The Pinkster Festival evolved into what is probably the oldest openly African holiday celebration in America. Join the museum for a special Pinkster Family Day featuring storytelling and music from Chief Baba Neil Clarke, and stick around to make some music of your own! Play with Colonial-era toys and games, explore the historic house, and join the farm team for some hands-on outdoor activities.

Other things to know:

Family Day runs from 11am to 3pm, with Chief Baba Neil’s presentation beginning at 1pm. This is an all ages event, ideal for kids ages 4-10.

Dress appropriately for the weather – Family Day takes place indoors and outdoors – and plan on getting dirty if you participate in any activities on the farm!

There is one port-o-san on the property, so please use a restroom before arrival.
