BronxWorks and Boricua College present Culture of Belonging, an exhibition and participatory art event at the Boricua College Gallery by artists Christine Murray, JotJol, Ronald Glover, L.A.I.M., Sodin Muhsin and King Hollywood. The exhibit is curated by Francis Palazzolo, Activity Coordinator and Artist-In-Residence at BronxWorks, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary as one of the largest social service organizations in the Bronx. The artists are current residents of various supportive housing developments, many of them having been formerly homeless. Through their creative pursuits, the artists are able to process their experiences and learn from one another. The artists explore a number of mediums to express themselves, including self-portraits, painting, sculpture, decoupage, and more. Supportive housing provides many other supportive services outside of the arts, including behavioral health services, access to benefits, case management, wellness activities, and more.
Culture of Belonging takes place during the college’s 50th anniversary year-long festivities. The works at the exhibit are personal displays of the artists’ interests, motivations, and creative activities for connecting to family heritage, community, and nourishing narratives. Additional support is provided by Materials for the Arts (MFTA). Additional background on the exhibition includes:
Thursday, September 5, 2024 – Friday, October 4, 2024 – The exhibition will be on view at the Boricua College Gallery, 890 Washington Avenue in the South Bronx. The exhibit will be open to the public from Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and open by appointment on Fridays.
