What You’ll Do

  • Receive training: A 20-minute on-site workshop teaches you how to identify tree species, measure size, and assess tree health (branches, leaves, signs of stress, etc.).

  • Use the Tree Census app: Split into small groups and survey different zones of Bensonhurst Park.

  • Collect valuable data: Your findings will help NYC Parks plan tree care, plant new trees, and expand the city’s canopy equitably.

  • Continue volunteering: After your first event, you’re welcome to keep counting trees on your own or at future events citywide.

What’s Provided

  • Tote bag with measuring tape, tree ID guide, and Parks Dept giveaways (hat, button, etc.)

  • Training from NYC Parks forestry staff

  • All materials and access to the Tree Census app

  • Support from Pineapple Ride volunteers and community leaders

Why It Matters

Just like the U.S. Census counts people, Trees Count 2025 is a once-in-a-decade inventory of New York City’s trees. This data helps NYC Parks understand how our urban forest changes over time and identify where more trees are needed. By participating, you’re directly improving Bensonhurst Park and building a greener, healthier city.
