Manhattan Asian American and Pacific Islander Family Day

Enjoy a day of exciting programs and activities to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Explore the history of the AAPI community with a jam-packed day of story times, living history, art making, and an AAPI family guide.

Sunday Story Time
11:30–12:30 pm, ages 3-6
It’s Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we’ll be celebrating all month long by reading about AAPI people and traditions, and by reading stories written by AAPI authors today! Today we’ll learn about Vice President Kamala Harris in a book written by her own niece, Meena Harris! With illustrations by Ana Ramírez González, Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea tells the story of two sisters working together with their community to transform the empty courtyard of their apartment into a playground! After the read-aloud, design your own playground! Ages 3–6

Artmaking and Conversation
12:30–2:30 pm
Do you know how Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month started? Come learn all about the Asian American Political Alliance and find out how two students from UC Berkeley started a whole movement! See how the movement continues with Family Program Interns and the AAPI figures they have been researching this year. Lend a hand and help us create a banner to show our support for the civil rights of all Asian American and Pacific Islander people. Stop by our button-making station to show your support with slogans or designs that you create. All ages

Living History
12:30–2:30 pm
Join us as we explore the stories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across American history. Families will interact with photographs and primary sources to redefine who gets an American story—what “hidden histories” will you uncover? All ages
